Schlock Over Ballet

In a piece slated for Sunday's Washington Post titled Dance Dilemma: Schlock Triumphs Over Ballet, Sarah Kaufman whines:

It has come to this: America's next big dance star will not be a heart-stopping dazzler like Mikhail Baryshnikov. It will be Wayne Newton -- or possibly Marie Osmond -- or someone even lower down the celebrity food chain. At least as far as millions of TV viewers go.

I have 2 words for you, Ms. Kaufman: Danny Tidwell.

Danny And Neil Workout

Can't a couple of dancer buddies workout at UCLA, shirtless, without some photographer snapping photos and publishing them on the internet? Apparently not, if those dancer buddies are Danny Tidwell and Neil Haskell.

Bravo Takes On Reality Dance

A press release from the Bravo TV Network:

NEW YORK September 10, 2007 Bravo announced "Step It Up," a new dance reality competition series produced by Magical Elves' producers Jane Lipsitz and Dan Cutforth (Emmy-nominated "Project Runway" and Emmy-nominated "Top Chef"). Created by Gunnar Wetterberg for Magical Elves, "Step It Up" will show what it takes to make it big in the cutthroat dance industry. Bringing together dancers from around the country, the series will challenge them to master every conceivable dance style, from ballet and ballroom to Broadway and burlesque. Casting begins today and interested dancers can go to www.BravoTV.com/Casting for details. Open calls will be held in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Atlanta in the upcoming weeks. The announcement was made by Frances Berwick, Executive Vice President, Programming and Production, Bravo.

"'Step It Up' pulls back the curtain on one of the most lively arts and one of America's favorite pastimes dance," said Berwick. "Like other creative professions, dance inherently has all the ingredients of competition and drama that make Bravo shows so compelling to watch."

Benji & Heidi Movie, New Choreographer?

From Eonline's Watch With Kristin:

Cate in Asheville, North Carolina: I'm still missing So You Think You Can Dance. Think I need to seek therapy?

Yes, along with Korbi and Jen, whom I'm really starting to worry about...The good news is we've got a little info that might ease your pain: Season-two winner Benji Schwimmer and his cousin Heidi Groskreutz are costarring in a movie about West Coast swing, which is currently filming! Amy Smart is the star, plus Caroline Rhea and Maulik Pancholy (Sanjay from Weeds) are also on the roster! Woohoo! BTW, we caught up with Nigel Lythgoe recently, and he talked about additions to the show next season: "[We'd love to have] Susan Stroman. She's an outstanding choreographer, and I'd love to get some classical choreographers on the show. If you can do contemporary, you can do classical!"

The movie mentioned is Love 'N' Dancing.

Here's Susan Stroman's Wikipedia entry, and here's a bio at PBS.

This is an excerpt from the final performance of the Broadway cast of the Tony-award winning musical Contact by Susan Stroman and John Weidman.

Ailey On Ellen

I have yet to find video of Sabra's appearance on the Ellen show. I did find this, Ellen visits and choreographs The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher is a big So You Think You Can Dance fan:

HW: What are you watching on TV?

TH: So You Think You Can Dance. I love that show. I don't love it because of the competition. I love it because I used to live in Manhattan and my daughter grew up in Manhattan. I used to take her to the ballet from the time she was three. She was seeing the New York City Ballet and if I could sit in a theater and watch dancers every night, that would be my idea of a good time. Live, professional, brilliant dancers are just amazing to me. So I'm not really into the ""Who gets eliminated"" part. I just like to watch the dancing.
